Ris Low - What do you think?

Quite a bit of controversies on Ris Low. The Miss Singapore World 2009 until yesterday.

Ris Low was crowned as Miss Singapore World 2009 on 31 July, 2009. She stepped down on 29 September, 2009.

In addition to winning the crown, Low was also named the following: Miss Community Ambassadress 2009, Miss Lumiere Ambassadress 2009, Miss Dazzling Eyes 2009, Miss Photogenic 2009, Miss Crowning Glory 2009, and Miss Best in Catwalk 2009.

Low, age 19 as of 2009, is currently studying for a diploma in Travel and Tourism and a diploma in Nursing at the Management Development Institute of Singapore.

She seemed to have handled an interview pretty badly.

Low has been heavily criticised for her inability to speak proper English as well as her apparent lack of intellect displayed during a televised fashion interview. However, some people have tried to downplay the fracas by saying that most youths in Singapore also speak in a similar manner. Low's interview has sparked much discussion about the pressing issue of Singlish among Singaporeans, especially in youths these days.

Singapore forums and websites alleged that Low won the crown underhandedly and was undeserving of the title. There have also been calls for Low to be stripped of her title as Miss Singapore World 2009, largely because of her poor command of the English language. This was apparent in an interview with her mispronunciations resulting in the following phrases: "leopard preens"(prints), "studying steel"(still studying), "something rad (red) and loud", "you know, boomz!", "bigini"(bikini), et cetera. A mocked up video of her interview was uploaded onto YouTube on 31 August, 2009, and has garnered over 200,000 views since then.

What caused her to have to step down yesterday however, was a case of credit card fraud.

On 25 September, 2009, it was revealed that she had been convicted of credit card fraud in May, 2009, and was sentenced to two years' probation. She faced five charges of misappropriation, cheating using illegally obtained credit cards, and impersonating their users' identities prior to winning the title of Miss Singapore World 2009. Low was unaware of the fact that she needed to declare the offense, and only declared it two months after the pageant when she was required to sign a contract.

There are several versions of the interview, where she was heavily criticized, and here below is one.

I have to agree that her command of the English language is not up to scratch. However, I am okay with that. With some others, I think we should be kinder on her as English is probably not her mother tongue and that interview could very well be conducted in Mandarin and I am certain, she would not have fumbled, as a Singaporean.

I am also agreeing that she did not come across as being very smart. I do not know about the criteria for representing a country as a beauty queen. I consider this a liability to the country on her part.

She did not seem to look too good either judging from the interview. Then looks are pretty subjective and I could be the odd one out.

An interestng post done by Sam on this if you care to read.

Lucy In the Sky with Diamonds dies

I have always been fascinated by The Beatles believing them to be the best band in the world.

Although Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is not my favorite Beatles song, it has always been a top ten. I was told and has always thought it been true, that this song was about LSD, the mind blowing hallucinate drug very popular in the 60's. I still think so. It was banned for many years from our local radio stations.

However, this sad news item says otherwise. It seems that the song was inspired by a childhood friend of Julian Lennon, Lucy O'Donnell who passed away yesterday at the age of 46 from lupus.

The Beatles Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds lyrics
.
Picture yourself in a boat on a river,
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly,
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes.
.
Cellophane flowers of yellow and green,
Towering over your head.
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes,
And she's gone.
.
Lucy in the sky with diamonds.
.
Follow her down to a bridge by a fountain
Where rocking horse people eat marshmellow pies,
Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers,
That grow so incredibly high.
.
Newspaper taxis appear on the shore,
Waiting to take you away.
Climb in the back with your head in the clouds,
And you're gone.
.
Lucy in the sky with diamonds,
.
Picture yourself on a train in a station,
With plasticine porters with looking glass ties,
Suddenly someone is there at the turnstyle,
The girl with the kaleidoscope eyes.

Yan Yoke Ping and Samsung

If rumors can't be considered news, then the following can't be breaking news.

Maybe just breaking rumors.

Well, this is not yet substantiated (as all rumors begin with), but I understand that Yan Yoke Ping will be joining Samsung in this country as the numero uno person, the head honcho if you will.

Rumors have it that Yan Yoke Ping will be 2 levels higher than Winnie Kuan and this event shall take place in a few days.

I shall be calling Ku Wei Jian tomorrow, the handsome person who was with Samsung right from the beginning to try to get a confirmation. Maybe Jonathan formally from Canon and now in Samsung can corroborate.

Watch this space.
.
The following pictures has got nothing to do with Yan Yoke Ping.
.
I watched another movie recently (no surprise) called Eagle Eye opened last year. This movie starred Shia LaBeouf and Michelle Monaghan.
.
Very exciting movie. Keeps you on the edge of your comfort chair. Really. This movie is much like Enemy of the State.
.
Well the pictures are of Michelle Monaghan.

Two days Before - Michael Jackson

In case you are too lazy to do it yourself, here below please find the final rehearsal by Michael Jackson.

I know I've said it dozen of times, I still can't get over the loss of such a great talent and a rare display of unique style and attitute.

Still, I know I should not say this but it is better, and he would agree that we should remember him as he was and not what he can and will become. Nonetheless, why not at least let him do his last "This is It" tour?

And Premalatha is on facebook

As facebook continues to dominate the social networking world, you will get connected to everyone you know one way or the other. If he/she is still living that is.

And as what is happening today was thought impossible in the past, you may one day be connected to someone you know who has since gone over to the other side. If it is ever possible, then facebook would do it. Already I have several people in mind that I would like to add on as friends across the spiritual divide.

Prema was my last Marketing Assistant when I was still in Canon. She seemed pretty excited to find me still alive and on facebook. We are now friends.

You can search for her pictures in:

http://s303.photobucket.com/albums/nn155/StanleyCheong/CanonMalaysians/

If you are like me, lazy and like to leave the office early, have long lunches which follow immediately with a tea break, then Prema would have been the best marketing assistant for you. Prema did her work (my work) systematically, consistently, and reliably. And she learns new things quickly. I remember her mastering computer application softwares like word processing, spreadsheet, PowerPoint and others quickly and seemingly effortlessly. Those days of yore, learning these stuff was a big deal, mind you.

"When would you be buying me lunch, Prema?"

Prema is currently working in HSBC Cyberjaya and she has 3 kids and is staying in Seremban.

By the way, Prema has acrophobia. I noticed that on a Canon company trip to Turkey. That was also the only time I held your hand; on the way down from a high historical place we went to.

Anyway facebook is a strange place. I am always reading women making harvests and finding lost sheeps. Prema is one of them. Also Margaret Lim, Karen Kow, Jeeneze, Patricia Lee .. What's happening?

Also, people keep finding chips and credits on casino floors. Joe Wong, Boyd Choy, Jeremy Lee .. What's happening?

And what's the point of sending me beers that I cannot drink?

And I see now that Alicia Hooi has moved into the Fish World. nice meh?

On a more serious note, Calvyn Laang has a really cute looking baby girl. By the way, I find it very hard to remember the spelling of the name Calvyn Laang. Happens to you?

There are 2.6 million Facebook Users in Malaysia

.
.
.
.
.
.
We have around 800,000 active users as of December 16, 2008 in which 45% of them are male, 51% female and 4% unstated.

Those were the figures for Malaysia. At that time, Facebook has 140 million active users in the world. Today they have 300 million active users and let me tell you, we have now 2.6 million active users here in this country.

And that my friend, is close to 10% of our total population.

Look at some of these figures for the world? Click on the picture below, will you?

District 9 and East of Eden

.
.
.
.
.
Did not go anywhere. How unfortunate. Hence watched many many movies over the last 4 days.
.
One of them as you can tell obviously was District 9. This is another one of those alien pictures. With some differences though. It is not one of those superior beings descending down on earth saying "Take me to your Leader" thing and threaten to wipe out human civilisation if we don't ...
.
Anyway, this movie is quite interesting really. A large alien spaceship was found hanging over Johannesburg and upon investigation contained many many aliens who were rather helpless and leaderless. They were kept in a gated area which turned slumlike and later was to be moved to another area, all 1.8 million of them.
.
Our hero, Wikus van der Merwe is the MNU field operative assigned to lead the relocation. He is played by somebody I've never heard before, Sharlto Copley. Actually all members of the cast were new to me.
.
The aliens looked like this.

.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Well, there were quite some action scenes, fighting, awesome alien fireweapons, helicopters, contract soldiers et al.
.
Watching this movie can be quite a dizzy experience as the cameras kept shaking like a documentary shoot. Well, the movie was purposely shot in this mock documentary style.
.
You may be interested to know the following:
.
Like "Alive in Joburg", the short film on which the feature film is based, District 9's setting is inspired by historical events that took place in South Africa during the apartheid era, with the film's title particularly referencing District Six. District Six, an inner-city residential area in Cape Town, was declared a "whites only" area by the government in 1966, with 60,000 people forcibly removed and relocated to Cape Flats, 25 km (15 mi) away. The film also refers to contemporary evictions and forced removals to new suburban ghettos in post-apartheid South Africa and the resistance of residents. This includes the high profile attempted forced removal of Joe Slovo Informal Settlement in Cape Town to Temporary Relocation Areas in Delft, the attempted evictions of Abahlali baseMjondolo and evictions in the shack settlement, Chiawelo, where the film was actually shot.

.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Another movie that I watched on Astro is the very old East of Eden starring of course, James Dean, the hero of many including Joe Wong.
.
East of Eden is a novel by Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck, published in September 1952.
According to his last wife Elaine, he considered this to be a requiem for himself—his greatest novel ever. Steinbeck stated about East of Eden: "It has everything in it I have been able to learn about my craft or profession in all these years." He further claimed: "I think everything else I have written has been, in a sense, practice for this."
.
I was prepared to be impressed as I sat down to watched this movie yesterday afternoon on Astro.
.
I was not.
.
To quote a review:
.
The plot is a rough "modern" (circa the 1910s) retelling of the biblical tale of Cain and Abel, set in and between Salinas and Monterey, California, as an allegory of good versus evil. But both Steinbeck and screenwriter Paul Osborn weave a dense allegorical tapestry, with those polar ethical opposites becoming less clear-cut as the film progresses.
.
Also this movie is supposed to grow on you. That you will like it more and more upon repeat watching. I guess the subtle intricacies of the events escaped me and I find the movie slow moving and somewhat tedious at times.
.
James Dean was the reason why I watched. He was well known for his rebellious nature and devil may care attitude, which seems to attract women. Joe Wong would agree.
.
Well, here in this movie, he acted such. However, I find him overacting maybe.
.
Then again, possibly at that time in 1955 when this movie was released, it could be huge then.
.
Incidentally there was a remake of this movie in 1981 starring Timothy Bottoms, Jane Seymour, Bruce Boxleitner.

Hung Siew and Gillian Chung

Hung Siew plays bass in a local pop/rock band called Rade. Jeremy Cheong is in this band too. Jeremy plays the lead guitar jointly with a mate/friend by the name of Kok Keong.

Right, I was moving around the Net and I stumbled into Hung Siew's Friendster's account and I came upon this metamorphosis done by him. I first saw this some years back in a Michael Jackson's music video of the song Black and White.

How is this done?

Incidentally you can check out some of the original songs done by Rade here in their myspace account.

I Agree with Madonna

"Sometimes we have to lose things before we can truly appreciate them", so said Madonna at the recent MTV VMA 2009 awards night.

"My God, he was so unique, so original, so rare". She said this too.

Call me sentimental. I was close to tears listening to Madonna's tribute to Michael Jackson. I've to agree with everything that she said about Michael Jackson.

I did not watched the VMA presentation live. I can't remember where I was.

So I watched a repeat earlier today. My comments?

The show was so wonderfully choreographed. They keep getting better and better. The stars were all electrifying. I agree with Barack Obama and thought what a jackass Kanye West was. Taylor Swift was so tall!, Now I can recognise Lady Gaga, she took off her veil to accept her award, Emimem looked older, Beyonce has a nice smile, Green Day sounded great, Russell Brand was so cool, Jack Black was not so funny this time round, Shakira was so short, especially when she was standing besides Taylor Swift, ..

And did you hear Russel Brand saying that Beyonce and Jay Z was the best looking couple there. .. And then followed up by saying that anybody with Beyonce would be the best looking couple. Cracked me up!

And the number of times censorship occurred in the repeat of this event sucked!

What was Serena Williams doing there?

And of course, I consider Madonna a living legend.

All in all, the show was incredibly entertaining. I am a happy man.

This I've Got to Tell You

Nothing special happened this morning as I drove to work listening to hitz.fm.

You know that hitz.fm has the best deejays, especially in the mornings with JayJay and Ian. (previously it was Rudy).

Then this happened. I can't remembered if it was JayJay or Ian who managed this question of who is the papa and mama of the Transformers.

And would you believe it.

It's TransParent!

Gee, if you are not chuckling, I guess you would have to be there.

By the way, I heard this song last evening and I've forgotten how beautiful this song is.

21

21 was a 2008 movie. I watched it on Astro a few days ago. You know, Astro shows older movies mah.

The story is about a group of college students lead by a professor to cheat casinos in Las Vegas by counting cards playing black jack.
.
I don't know about you, but with a story line like this and knowing how greedy I can be; I can't help but enjoy this movie. Kevin Spacey was the professor. I have always been impressed with Kevin Spacey. This guy is so cool. He does not have to flex his muscles, does not have to talk loud, does not have to run about and does not have to physically fight anybody in most of his movies. Yet he portrays great strengths and intelligence. I like him.
.
The lead female is Kate Bosworth. I've mentioned her before on an earlier post on heterochromia. This is the condition where a person or an animal has different eye ball colors. An interesting phenomenon.

.
.
.
.
.
By the way, Laurence Fishburne was also in this movie. Yeah, this is the guy who replaced Dr. Gilbert "Gil" Grissom in CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
.
I think this movie is still on Astro. Go watch it.

4 Heads of States

You cannot be expecting all Heads of States to be either extremely vain, checking on their attire or constantly be focussed on their jobs.
.
Some of them are just like you and me. Normal people.

Serena's "I didn't say I will kill you"

Just finished watching this semi's a little while ago on Astro.

"I didn't say I will kill you. Are you serious? .. Are you serious?" Serena Williams berated the line judge at 2 match point.

Kim Clijsters would have won anyway.

I maintain my prediction that Kim Clijsters will win the trophy this US Open. She will be facing 19 year old Caroline Wozniacki in the Finals.

Clijsters' comeback continues after Williams loses cool
By Joshua ReySunday, September 13, 2009

Statement from Tournament Referee Brian Earley

She didn’t want to win this way. And from the sound of the boos echoing throughout Arthur Ashe Stadium, tennis fans didn’t either.

But Kim Clijsters’ comeback story continued at the US Open Saturday in a manner rarely seen in Flushing since the days of John McEnroe and Ilie Nastase: via code violation.

I am betting on Kim Clijsters to win

I don't gamble.

But if I do, then Belgian Kim Clijsters would be my favorite to beat Serena Williams tomorrow in the semis and beat either one of the other 19 year old semi-finalists to clinch the US Open Trophy this year.

26 year old Kim Clijsters actually retired in May 2007 and changed her mind last month.

Watching her this time round, she looks extremely confident, solid, moves well and execute her awesome forehands repeatedly successfully. She is so strong.

.
.
.
Clijsters gave birth to a daughter on 27 February 2008, at 1:35 pm at the Vesalius hospital in Tongeren, Belgium. The girl, Jada Ellie, weighed 3.035 kg and measured 51 cm.
.
Clijsters's mother had a son Zeth with second husband Jan Goossens a few weeks after Jada Ellie was born

Christopher Ng Kok Keong

One of the benefits of writing a blog is that an old friend of whom you have lost contact may suddenly reappear in your life. This person may also lead you on to a few more guys.

Christopher Ng Kok Keong was looking for Thomas Lee and then wham!, he came into one of my posts on Brenda Kua and Yan Yoke Ping.

Happy Birthday SC - A Sequel

To the best of my knowledge,

You cannot wish me a happy belated birthday.

My birthday is not belated. Your wish is. Hence, you can send me a belated birthday wish. Well I have a couple of these. Therefore a few more people to thank.

I hope I do not miss out anybody.

Thanks Malani Cumarasamy. You are such an optimistic and joyful person. People around you can so easily be infected. How are your 2 boys coming around?

Thanks Peter Chow. I came to know you better only after you left Canon. You can always be counted on to give sensible advice and I will always consider you to be generally knowledgeable in quite a varied field.

Thanks Stephen Richard. You are not related to Canon, I know. However I know you come visiting now and then. You are the best architect I know. You listen, you consider, then you give your opinions. And your opinions are always not frivolous.

Thanks Liew Sip Chon. I support you in the things that you do. I did not forget you speaking up in front of the General Manager years ago in my support when I ask to be promoted to a Product Manager in Canon. With your support then, I became one.

.... and for the rest, read my earlier post. Please?

Rais Yatim Changed his Mode

I refuse to consider it my fault when I do not have much good to say about some of our politicians, especially those from Barisan; especially those from UMNO.

Datuk Seri Utama Dr. Rais Yatim (born 15 April 1942) is the current Malaysian Information, Communications, and Culture Minister. His ministry is considered a new ministry formed from the merger of three separate ministries in Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's smaller cabinet.

He is also a Member of Parliament from the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), the leading party in the ruling coalition of Barisan Nasional.

If you have not done so already, please watch this clip and form your own opinions. The following words may come to your mind.

arrogant, racist, uncultured, undignified, unbecoming, condescending, .. and what an ugly looking person.

Happy Birthday Stanley Cheong

And yes, it is my birthday today.

So "Happy Birthday" Stanley Cheong.

Besides me wishing 'ownself', there were also a couple of others who wished me; with one wishing that I get everything I wanted. I have to decline this one as quite a lot of things that I wish for myself are illegal.

In rock jargon, Jullie Chin is Rock Steady. She never fail to send me a card every year. (I am going to pretend that she does not send off 120 cards every month). May I wish you back that every house you move in brings you joy and happiness. Well, and may your friends bother to reply your emails.

Samantha Sim, thanks for your wishes. May your passion for your publication project never diminishes and may your husband continues to take pictures with you always, as in your recent Bali trip.

Marjorie Chang, thanks too. And may your very pretty daughters grow up to love their mum to the max. (Pictures?)

Joe Wong, thanks. You epitomize enduring hopes and dreams. You are the one who spoke of chicks more than anyone I know. May you be young at heart and body forever.

Wong Choon Heng, thanks. Should you become the CEO (of which you are capable, no doubt)of Canon Europa, do not forget me. However, should you come back, then we need your vote for the opposition come next GE.

Karen Kow, thanks. I have never seen you sad or disappointed in any way. I wish you continuous happiness and life's satisfaction all the way.

Margaret Lim, thanks. If Larry Poon does not realise how lucky he is to have you, send him over to me; and I shall count his blessings for him.

Jeeneze Lee, thanks. I think you are as unique as your name. I think you joined Canon when you were 19? You exhibit composure, calm and a quiet intelligence and confidence. Hey, with all those compliments, how about buying some drinks?

Angela Woon, thanks. I can't say I pictured you as the HR Manager, AP Region of a large American company when I first knew you in Canon. But hey, Congratulations!

Pauline Wong, thanks. I considered you as the best person to do the channel business way back. Now I know you are the best person to do anything and make it a success. May your 3rd Mile Square in Klang Road be a huge success.

.. and to the rest. I wish that you continue to harbor no bigotry, seek knowledge and treasure friendship, stay healthy, make some money and remember to vote for the opposition in the next GE.

The Sensible Hishamuddin?

Lunch yesterday for me was in a coffee shop in Petaling Jaya.

Just behind me on the next table were 2 men speaking to each other in English. The thin bespectacled one said.

"How can a minister be so stupid. Talk like that."

The fat friend responded.

"I think he just got fucked by Najib"

Then they continued talking a bit more on this subject.

I guess they were referring to our Home Minister (not your wife, brother). The about turn in the news yesterday where he said the cow's head idiots should be charged in court.

This is the one day change from the previous day's report by the Malaysia Insider on him. "Headline: Hisham defends cow-head protestors"

Mambo No.5

Of course, you have seen this before. How could you not have.

See it again lah. It is such a happy song. How was your Merdeka yesterday?

One, two, three, four, five
Everybody in the car, so come on let's ride
To the liqueur-store around the corner
The boys say they want some gin and juice
But I really don't wanna
.
Beerbust like I had last week
I must stay deep
Because talk is cheap
I like Angela, Pamela, Sandra and Rita
And as I continue you know
They are getting sweeter
.
So what can I do I really beg and you my lord
To me flirting it's just like sport, anything fly
It's all good let me dump it
Please set in the trumpet
.
A little bit of Monica in my live
A little bit of Erica by my side
A little bit of Rita is all I need
A little bit of Tina is what I see
A little bit of Sandra in the sun
A little bit of Mary all night long
A little bit of Jessica here I am
A little bit of you makes me your man
.
Jump and down go and move it all around
Shake your head to the sound
Put your hand on the ground
Take one step left
And one step right
One to the front and one to the side
.
Clap your hands once
And clap your hands twice
And if it looks like this
Then you are doing it right
.
A little bit of Monica in my live
A little bit of Erica by my side
A little bit of Rita is all I need
A little bit of Tina is what I see
A little bit of Sandra in the sun
A little bit of Mary all night long
A little bit of Jessica here I am
A little bit of you makes me your man
.
A little bit of Monica in my live
A little bit of Erica by my side
A little bit of Rita is all I need
A little bit of Tina is what I see
A little bit of Sandra in the sun
A little bit of Mary all night long
A little bit of Jessica here I am
A little bit of you makes me your man
.
I do all to
Fall in love with a girl like you
You can't run and you can't hide
You and me gonna touch and sky
