FIVE hundred and eighty-nine civilians arrested. Dozens of canisters of tear gas popped and spewed into the various parts of KL's historic core. Truckloads of water jets sprayed onto the people who came from near and far. Bruised bodies as citizens were hauled into waiting Black marias. Here in Kuala Lumpur, August 1, 2009 seemed like a war zone, a national riot of epic proportions.
And here's the reaction: Not a single car was left burning; no flower pot broken. Just one emphatic message to the country's leaders - No to ISA.
