Behind Blue Eyes
I will be insulting you if I have to tell you who they were.
Behind Blue Eyes by the Limp Bizkit was very popular about a year ago enjoying regular airplays over the radios. You may or may not know that the original version was by the English group The Who; first appearing in 1971.
Who? Well, they were one of the 32 performers in Woodstock '69 and you can still hear them doing We Won't Get Fooled Again every time you watch Crime Scene Investigation. They performed an astounding 25 songs in the epic Woodstock 69, I think the most songs performed by any group.

I think the version by Limp Bizkit is better. However they have the benefits of better technology in terms of sound production and cinematography. And an existing version to build upon.
Anyway, let's remember that the song was composed by Pete Townshend and originally sang by Roger Daltrey both from The Who in 1971.
Check out the kissing scene again on the second version. Halle Berry won't get an Oscar from that take but she has my vote.

I've got this from a person called Ken. This joke is a real silly one. But it got me laughing hard.
Ah Lek was asked to make a sentence using 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9,10.
Not only did he do it 1 to 10, he did it again from 10 back to 1. This is what he came up with.....
1 day I go 2 climb a 3 outside a house to peep. But the couple saw me, so I panic and 4 down. The man rushed out and wanted to 5 with me. I ran until I fell 6 and threw up. So I go into 7-eleven and grabbed some 8 to throw at him. Then I took a 9 and try to stab at him. 10 God he run away.
10 I put the 9 back and pay for the 8 and left 7-eleven. Next day I called my boss and told him I was 6. He said 5, tomorrow also no need to come back 4 work. He also asked me to go climb a 3 and jump! down. I don't understand. I am so nice 2 him but I don't know what he 1.

Some Questions from Sunny Ch'ng
Sunny was with us in the late seventies and early eighties. Sometimes I wonder how I can remember such things when I don't remember important dates like anniversaries, valentines, Jullie's birthdays etc.
Relatively I think Sunny was better educated than most of us and I still remember when he was Jack Lim's blue eye boy. Jack then was our Managing Director. Anyway I too remembered there was a pretty girl named Alice whom he 'kow tim' and married. I remembered as well that there was a jogathon and Alice did pretty well. I think she didn't know then that she was in her early stages of pregnancy with her first child. I hope they have a wonderful life together (Sunny and Alice). Wonder how many children are there?
Sunny's questions: Hey Stanley, do you know whereabout are Michael Kuan, Henry Ong, Simon Teh, Wong Kum Cheong, Esther Law and Daniel Low?
Michael Kuan is as reclusive as the then Howard Hughes. Absolutely no news except that one of his two sons was with Canon doing copier sales some years ago. Michael came down from Penang to head the Typewriter and Calculator Team in the seventies. It was about the time when the Americans were kicked out of Vietnam. He employed Liew Sip Chon.
Henry Ong was a tall fellow who used to beat everybody in table tennis. I used to see him for quite a number of years in shopping malls as he liked to walk around with his wife and young kid. He had a moustache a la the guy in Magnum. I have no chance to bum into him over the last few years although I still frequent the shopping malls.
Simon Tay should still be in New Zealand. He used to conduct the most amazing and interesting product demonstation on Canon Electronic Typewriters. Again, no sound no picture for quite some years.
Esther Law graduated from Universtiy Malaysia and joined us as a Marketing Executive. Straight as a arrow and had always been against my involvement in the 4digits business and Liew Sip Chon strong use of the English language. She fell in love with a colleague and left when it did not work out. I wonder too where is she now.
Went on a trip with Wong Kum Cheong to Haadyai and he met this Thai girl who keep insisting on being bought something and WKC keep explaining to her that he has no money. WKC wasn't lying. It was hilarious.
Daniel Low left Canon and work with Beyen for a while, then went on his own, then disappeared.
I know I wasn't of much help to Sunny Ch'ng. But I can't know everything, can I?

This song sure would be familiar with most people but I bet you may not have seen Scott Mackenzie before. The images and people in this clip aroused such nostalgia in me. Watch it. It may have the same effect on you if you are above 45, a baby boomer or a kid of baby boomers.
NS Tan, KC Han, Shereen Phua, Liew Sip Chon-Part 1
When I spoke to him in the afternoon then, he said he woke up and he had problems moving, said something about his back. He went for acupuncture treatments and needed to rest. Hopefully he is alright now. Looking forward to seeing him again. I think he is now with U-Mobile.
We looked like this 2000 years ago.
The rest of us had dinner in Lan Kwai Fong in the Curve. This place, the Street looked 35 times better than the LKF in Hongkong. When I arrived, KC Han and Liew were there. Then came NS Tan and later followed by Shereen Phua.
I had this question for NS but he jumped me to it. He asked "ten ngong lei wan doe cheen were". "I heard you made some money" Obviously he himself has gone up the seashore already. When he cashed out of Compugates, he cashed up. If they reported this in some newspaper in China, you will have thousands of those Chinese women coming here, wanting to be his friend.
Okay, so NS was the Executive Director in Compugates and now he has several companies in the IT industry. One of them is Aver Awards with outlets in Low Yat, Sunway Pyramid and Leisure Cineplex in the Curve. Big time businessman, this NS Tan.
You may want to know that it was NS Tan who nicknamed Steven Wong, our General Manager then "low wong qua". See even then, he knew he was going to hit big time and could not be intimidated by bosses and authorities.
He has put on some weight. How not to when you've become so well to do. A current picture? Okay.
Handsome lei? The lady beside him is not his wife. She is KC Han. I think I have said too much about this number 1 Will Writer already. National champion, this one. If I say anymore, you may think I am in love with her or I have some shares in her business or I am some stalker or all three.

The Malaysian Political Oscars!

Our political situation is like something out of a movie – so here are the awards. The envelope, please…
The Wide Angle Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, headquartered for no particular reason in Skudai, presents this year’s Malaysian Political Oscars.
The most widely watched television event in Malaysia, the Political Oscar telecast reaches over 1 billion viewers, some of whom are dead, some of whom are 130 years old, and most of whom are registered at the same address.
How does it work? Members of the academy (all Malaysian taxi drivers who despite being allegedly the worst in the world at driving taxis are remarkably good at political analysis) vote on these awards, and the results are tabulated by the auditors of some large accounting firm who would rather do this sort of thing than real accounting work,which might explain the state of the economy.
Here are the nominees and winners.
Best Supporting Actor It is a crowded field this year, with many stellar performances from both veterans and newcomers.
The nominees include private investigator P. Balasubramaniam in Missing; Pusrawi’s Dr. Mohd Osman in Rear Window; Zaid Ibrahim in Gone in Sixty Seconds; and Raja Petra Kamaruddin in An Inconvenient Truth.
But the Best Supporting Actor Oscar goes to Penang Umno leader Ahmad Ismail for his controversial performance in Pride and Prejudice.
Despite his recent success, which led to him being cast in Under Siege and Raging Bull, Ahmad has flatly refused roles in the films Anger Management and Atonement.
Best Supporting Actress For her critically-acclaimed performance in Minority Report, this year’s Best Supporting Actress Oscar goes to Sin Chew Daily reporter Tan Hoon Cheng.
Interestingly, immediately after that film completed principal photography, Tan was the unwitting star of Catch and Release, a film that may or may not have been directed by Syed Hamid Albar, depending on which version of the studio press kit you read.
Tan spent just 18 hours on location, before quitting, citing creative differences.
Best Cinematography For his impactful camera work in the V.K. Lingam vehicle The Conversation, the Oscar for Cinematography goes to Gwo Loh Burne.
(Although The Conversation was shot some time ago, due to his refusal to be credited for many months, Gwo Loh Burne could not be given the award earlier. When he finally came forward, this legal thriller was re-released in some markets as The Burne Identity.)
The Conversation beat out Entrapment, starring Chua Soi Lek, which also features an anonymous cinematographer.
Best Foreign-Language Film Agricultural Study Tour, a Taiwanese sleeper hit, was shot entirely by coincidence, supposedly with no director and no funding.
Nonetheless, a sequel, Exile on My Taiwanese Farm: Peeling my Taugeh might be filmed next year with some of the original cast.
Best Original Screenplay Jumper, written by Anwar Ibrahim, wins this year’s award.
Although the film suffers from a cast of unknowns, whose number seems to fluctuate from scene to scene (though always at least 31), the script is undeniably original and exciting. It also has the potential for numerous sequels, which will prove profitable for the actors.
Best Adapted Screenplay Written by a team of in-house screenwriters from the Attorney-General’s Studios, The Accused, starring Anwar Ibrahim, is allegedly adapted from instructions given by political superiors. A remake ofthe 1998 flop, but with many of the same actors and production team.
Best Actress Seputeh Member of Parliament Teresa Kok was competing against herself this year with sterling performances in a slew of releases: Election; Woman on Top; Supergirl; and, in cinemas until last Friday, the black comedy Enemy of the State.
She wins the Best Actress Oscar, however, for her most famous role, Miss Congeniality, which has earned her praise from audiences and critics alike.
Best Actor The big stars of yesteryear dominated the Best Actor category thisyear.
Nominees include S. Samy Vellu in Gone With The Wind; Dr. MahathirMohamed in V for Vendetta; and both Najib Tun Razak and Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in the comedy Trading Places.
The winner, however, of the Malaysian Political Oscar for Best Actor is Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for his flawless, nuanced, masterful performance in Eyes Wide Shut.

Dr Mahathir, I Don't Think So (2)
13. I know many who admire the West tend to support their values. They would like to interpret the disastrous performance of the BN based on Western thinking. But we are Asians and in Malaysia our basic racial differences are extreme. All we can do to avoid confrontation between the races is to allow them to form race based parties and to have them cooperate with each other. This was the BN policy and practise. And it worked for almost half a century.
14. We cannot fault the BN concept and governance. We have to look elsewhere for the loss of confidence in the party.
I just cannot disagree more.

Fadilah Hassan
Fadilah is a very strong lady. Not that she can challenge the Chinese ladies in the recent Olympics, but she is so resourceful. You can say she is currently the Head of her family. Her father passed on not too long ago and she takes care of her mother, sister and brother financially and in other aspects as well.
Well, I begin to know her when she joined my team in Canon in the nineties as a Customer Relations Officer and then later in sales on supplies. After when I left, she too joined me in Stone-Mashe doing sales. She left after a few years. She has set sales records still unbroken today. She is one of the most self-motivated person I know.
She is on her own now and we continue to be in touch as Stone-Mashe is currently one of her suppliers.
She is a Cantonese speaking Muslim with a Chinese Malaysian mother and a Muslim Eurasian Malaysian father. Of course she speaks English and Malay fluently.
Her peers earlier include Ann, Malani, Gwendolyn, Pauline, Serena, Vivien, Tricia, Jackie Leow etc.

Moses
Of course everybody remembers Moses.
When you were born, the Pharoah was then most afraid of you Hebrews and ordered all baby boy infants to be killed. You mom put you in a basket and place you in the Nile. The Pharoah's daughter found you but your clever mom offered herself as a nurse and what do you know, your mom brought you up as your nurse. Clever lei?
You did not forget your roots and later took the Hebrews away as explained in the book of Exodus.The Egyptian army came after you guys and chased you to the edge of the Red Sea. God whispered something to you and you lift up your rod and Walah, the sea parted for you guys to run across. You lifted your rod again over at the other side and so the bad soldiers drowned.
Still, not so easy. You guys were in the desert for 40 years looking for the land called Canaan simply because you refused to ask for directions. Well, all these while, through God, you provided them food and striking your rod on stones, you provided them water.
Somewhere along the way you went up Mount Sinai and came down holding 2 big stone tablets with 10 laws from God telling people how to live. Can you remember how did you get so strong?
While you were gone, the people started to worship a calf stature. You were very angry and destroyed the statue with the 2 stone tablets. Of course God later forgave everyone and you made another set of the Ten Commandments.
You are going to live to a ripe old age of 120.
The Quran too tells of your birth and upbringing similarly except that your name was Musa.

I can't say I am not a little disappointed with no change in our Government.
Anwar said he has submitted the list of names of crossovers to Badawi and wanted assurances of a smooth transition without Emergency Rule being invoked possibly resulting in chaos and public disorders. If true, it sounds pretty noble.
This group that gathered in the Kelana Jaya stadium last night to listen to the likes of Anwar, Khalid, Kit Siang, Guan Eng etc was estimated by various people by different numbers. From as little as 7000 to 20000 strong. I wonder how do they count the number of people in a large crowd.
Last night, Anwar said “We, the leaders of Pakatan, jointly wrote a letter to Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi - it was handed by our representatives today - seeking an immediate meeting to discuss the following: firstly, the immediate release of all political detainees including Raja Petra, Teresa Kok, Manoharan and the rest; and secondly, to discuss the smooth, peaceful transition of Power.
“We have the numbers, and tonight on the eve of 916 - and tomorrow is the D-Day - we are ready to form…(The crowd’s roars drown Anwar’s words.)
Looking at the pictures, it is indeed heartening to see the support from people of all races standing next to each other. Makes me feel good inside in spite the no Government change today.

There is No Stopping Pakatan Rakyat
With the successes of the March GE and then Permatang Pauh, much hope has been given to ordinary people on the streets that Change is Possible and can be obtained NOW!!!
Barison Nasional needs time to do damage control i.e. if damages so far can be controlled; and the current Tide can be rolled back. Time is currently not what they have in abundance. But they will have time if Emergency Rule is declared.
Hence I am with those who advocate that nobody takes to the streets to protest the ISA arrests of Raja Petra, Teresa Kok and Sin Chew Daily reporter Tan Hoon Cheng.
Incidentally, Tan Hoon Cheng has finally been released and made history by having served the shortest detention period under the ISA, to be exact 20 hours.

Jullie Chin was our Assistant Sales Manager (I think) in the Fax Department on Patrick Yee's watch in the late eighties.
She was a BSc graduate. A pretty big deal then. You may be interested to know that most of our Senior Managers then were non-graduates including Liew Sip Chon, Richard Yeow, Patrick Yee, Steven Wong and yours' truly.
How does she look like?
How does Jullie look like now? I could be meeting her and possibly Majorie Chang next week or so. Will try to capture a few pictures then.

Ahmad Ismail is an Idiot
If Ahmad Ismail wants to be noticed among the hundreds of politicians, then it may explain what he does. Otherwise, who would know of Ahmad Ismail! Both Mahathir and Anwar has gone through this way before. Being ultra, that is.
However times have changed. Times always do. Anwar has changed. Mahathir has changed. Current songs are different. To be somewhat of an extremist, move up politically and change later seemed an outdated formula.
Today, the people are more educated and more informed. The March General Election is evident of this. This is again reinforced by the By-Election in Permatang Pauh. As long as the nation has to compete internationally of which we should not doubt, then Malaysians as a people will have to be competitive. Affirmative race specific actions will just have to go! First class, Second class, Third class citizenship too must go!
We can look on the bright side though. Just like I mentioned earlier that a weak Badawi offers an opportunity for an earlier change, a person like Anmad Ismail can hasten this process as well.
Malik Imtiaz Sarwar in his blog, Give Ahmad Ismail a Break, Will You? wrote, "I think we should leave Ahmad Ismail and his merry men to do what it is they do best; reinforce the choices voters made on March 8th when they decided to hand over Penang to the Pakatan Rakyat."

Kingdom Come - Get It On
The voice and the musical arrangements are almost the same. They were even once accused of being a Led Zepellin Kingdom Klone.
Many years ago, I introduced their music to William Augustin and he mentioned that their music made him relax.
I am revisiting them after watching Jimmy Page of Led Zeppellin and Leona Lewis performed "Whole Lotta Love" during the closing of the Beijing Olympics where they did a show to announce the next London 2012 Olympics.

Mahathir, I don't think so
In Mahathir's blog, he wrote.
3. When the opposition did very well in the 2008 elections, foreign observers talk about a wind of change in Malaysia; about how racialism had been rejected, how Anwar, their favourite would soon take over the Government.
4. I had differed from these casual observers because I know that it was not rejection of racial politics which helped the opposition. It was simply disgust on the part of members of UMNO, MCA and Gerakan of the Premiership and leadership of Dato Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. Talking on the ground, this was quite obvious.
5. Far from the opposition's "win" being brought about by rejection of racial politics, it has actually enhanced racial politics. We talk more about race and racial interest than we did in the last 50 years.
Members of Barisan were disgusted with Badawi's leadership and therefore the opposition took 5 states and denied the government of a two third majority in Parliament? And talking on the ground, this was quite obvious? This casual observer beg to differ, Tun Mahathir.
Racial politics can only go so far, When the people whom Barisan were supposed to help realised that it is not happening, they can and will be influenced to vote for change. It is just too simplistic to blame Badawi alone. In fact, I think he is fairer to the Rakyat than you, Tun. Just too bad that he is not a strong enough leader. Anyway, the good thing is, because he is not strong, it gives rise to an opportunity for a earlier change than otherwise possible.
We certainly talk more about race and racial issues now than the past 51 years. And it is about time too. However, we are not talking about this in the manner you think. More are talking about it and rejecting racial politics in the interest of everybody and nation. Yes, I beg to differ.
The other blog I read was my daughter Jeradyne's blog. A really important person to me. She wrote.

Apple 7
I post here a video clip of a song they did a couple of weeks ago in the event "Meet the Band" in Goldhill Club in Kepong. The name of this song is "She Made Me Smile".
I've had a girlfriend once who made me smile. She has her own car, pay for her own cinema tickets, food and drinks/beers. If she had paid for mine as well, she could have made me her slave, let alone smile.
In case you wonder, Jeremy has a day job.

Have You Ever Voted
After all the usual mindless subjects were discussed, we turned to the subject of our local politics. Like all experts wannabees, we analysed to death our versions of history leading up to the March 8 Tsunami and what happened after that to the Permatang Pauh landslide success of Anwar. We then presented our expert views on oncoming issues and events. We were proud to predict what will happen by September 16, 2008.
We were very impressed with ourselves. It helped greatly when alcohol flows freely through your blood vessels swimming with your abundant cholesterols, the good and bad ones.
I think somebody mentioned too that Anwar has got some good looking daughters.
Then out of the blue, I was presented with this question by Chong Shean Nam, looking at me suspiciously. "Actually have you ever voted", he asked.
I have always known over the last couple of years, this embarassing moment will come. For whatever reasons, it is without a doubt highly irresponsible for me not to have done my civic duty. It is truly inexcusable.
I hereby apologise to all Malaysians and I deserve all brickbats thrown at me.
Hereon, I shall endeavour to vote in all General Elections.

An Email from Jack Lim
Hi Stan,
Sorry, I have not been able to communicate promptly and often enough. The trouble these days is that I have a lot of work and no job. Hope to go back to the golf course more regularly soon just for the walk. If I continue to stay away, there is the danger of my leg muscles atrophying. Most people, if not all, have not enough time to do every thing they want, but we must put our priorities right. To me health should be on top of the list. This becomes more convincing after every hospital visit or funeral of people we used to know.
You are absolutely right, we must do lunch again soon. Have been thinking of it too but never got around to doing it. Helpfully next month.
Incidentally, is it ok if I forward some mails to the ‘ canonmalaysians’ site if I find something worth sharing?

Merdeka Baby Lim Kok Hin
I do not know of all these people except for Lim Kok Hin. Not only was he born on this date; he was born in 1957 as well. He could be crying for the first time when Tuanku Abdul Rahman was shouting Merdeka 7 times with his right hand held up high. Save for a short period before the umbilical cord was severed, he got independent being released from his mother physically on this day.
A former colleague warned me not to write about Kok Hin as he can be a pretty sensitive fellow.
He said not to write about him liking to wear white pants with red briefs in his early Canon days. He said not to write about him during his wild days in England. He said not to write about his social hits in quite a few states in Malaysia. He had stints in Penang, Sabah and PJ. (maybe more, lazy to research).
This person said Kok Hin, as he advance in his career in Canon, he progressively became more serious in his work and outlook, and less of a brother. This I think is the correct stance to take as we can see that Anwar currently too talk and dress differently as well, as he moved towards Prime Ministership.
Lim Kok Hin is so well known that I am sure I do not have to point out to you which one is him in the pictures.
