Restoran Sin Kee

Jeremy Lee and I have something in common. We like to take meals in this restaurant. We have never met there before, though.

This place is directly oppostite Sentral Station in Brickfields. They were operating on the same side of the road as Sentral before Sentral was built. I was introduced to this place by Pauline Wong, a CanonMalaysian, many many years ago.

It is run by a Hainanese (naturally) family and the late twenty something cook son is my friend Edwin Foo. He stays along the same street as me.

The business was first started by the grandfather who used to cook for the British colonists and I think he mentioned in Kuantan.

When a little younger, Edwin used to work for some restaurant in some 5 star hotel. Before joining his dad here, he was the chef in Mango Tree Bangsar if you know this place.

Sin Kee serves Chinese as well as Western. The signature dish is the 'mun fan', some kind of a steamed mixture of meat, cabbage and rice. Their version is a darker version compared with other places.

Our favorite dishes are the ginger steamed fish, beancurd with minced pork and stir-fried bittergourd with roast pork.

The beancurd with minced pork has the largest portion of minced pork in this country.

Prices are reasonable and I recommend you go a bit early as the place is not too big and it is always crowded during peak hours.

Edwin has been offered by many an investor to expand the business and possibly to build chains.

He currently has been resisting all offers.

Edwin drinks in a pub in Danau Desa called Rum. The owners are his friends. Meeting him will have to be a bit late though in view of his restaurant business.
